Extra Help

Creating
Opportunities for Student Success

As our students experience the rigor of instructions and the many expectations that keep the instructional focus “standards-based”, we understand the need to extend learning and enrichment opportunities beyond the traditional classroom setting. Subsequently, we have developed a comprehensive extended-day and tutorial program. These opportunities are only effective if students take advantage of the same. Please note the many opportunities for extra help in this edition of our school newsletter. It is critical to our students’ success that they expand their learning venue beyond the classroom. During the extended Media Center hours, there will be faculty and staff members available to support students with projects, assignments and general tutorial needs.

Homework vs Assignments

There is a distinct difference between “homework” and teacher-initiated assignments. Over time, parents have asked the infamous question: “Did you complete your homework?” The most popular responses have been: “I finished it in school .” and “I don’t have any.” In either case, the responses place the burden of studious preparation and organization of information on the school. Simply put, the local school provides a tremendous amount of information during the course of the school day that must be reviewed, rewritten and organized daily. The time set aside to do these tasks is after the traditional school day. The responsibility of monitoring the same is the primary function of both the parent and the student. As a matter of fact, the expectation to develop one’s academic portfolio is the fundamental act of “HOMEWORK”. Homework is not to be confused with teacher-mandated assignments. The two represent collaborative entities that ensure student engagement and monitors the same. Homework is a relationship of expected school-to-home initiatives that are monitored and mandated in the home setting. The school, while a critical link to homework, creates a platform on a daily basis for students to gain, capture and explore new information. The time in the traditional classroom is insufficient to promote the mastery of the information. So, the next time your child tells you, they “have no homework” or that they “completed it in school”, they are expressing a lack of personal responsibility to master instructional information. More significantly, they are declaring that there is not a relationship between the expectations of the school and the extended-school: HOME.
